ARMD and Antioxidants

Why would antioxidants help with macular degeneration? Oxidation itself is a chemical reaction that happens when something has exposure (usually) to oxygen. Electrons are lost and then stolen from surrounding molecules. There is evidence to suggest that macular degeneration involves an oxidation process in the retina, which weakens the macular cells through electron loss and the creation of what are called free radicals (molecules lacking an electron). If this is indeed the case with macular degeneration than antioxidants (molecules that can lose an electron without becoming free radicals) can help to stop the creation of free radicals and slow or stop the damage. So the question becomes macular degeneration treatment, what is in a good eye vitamin?
